I started my dip into the pool of Hamlin Garland's works with "Rose," and the only reason I've been able to go on, I believe, is I'm a demented former literature student. Although many reviewers feel this is the writer's best novel, it's hard for me to find many good words to say about it. An adherent of realism, probably his descriptions of life both on the farm and in the city are more true-to-life than many, but the fact that Rose is recognized from an early age as a golden child and her steady climb away from the farm to a university education and into Chicago society is a bit hard to take. In the end, she meets the right man (although not the rich one), too, and we have to assume she'll live happily ever after. The author does have some pretty modern attitudes about love and marriage, which may have shocked his contemporaries, but just seem out of place in the context of the time when the novel was published. He does a much better job covering some of the same material in his "A Son of the Middle Border."Product details

The Rose of Dutcher Coolly Hamlin Garland 9781171535744 Books Reviews
I loved this story. Such a great writer and a timeless plot. I am a huge fan of hamlin garland after reading his autobiography recently. Over a hundred years later it is still relevant as artists and women and students and farmers continue to struggle with embracing and finding acknowledgement of their value in society.
This book made me cry more than once. Rose is a great character.
A "western" like I assumed. I usually read LaMoiure or Zane grey type books. However this one is excellent and read very fast as I couldn't wait to finish the story. Again....a very good and well written book.
